Everything You Need to Know About: Salmonella Enterica

Diarrhea. Infections. Even typhoid fever — the downstream effects of gram-negative Salmonella enterica bacteria range from frustrating to life-threatening. Now is an excellent time to put preventative measures in place to help you and your loved ones avoid any Salmonella contaminations in your future.

Most people associate Salmonella enterica with contaminated food—e.g., eggs or undercooked chicken. After exposure, a large number of Salmonella enterica bacteria will congregate in a human or animal’s digestive tract. There, Salmonella enterica will cause a wide range of painful gastrointestinal symptoms, ranging from nausea and abdominal cramps to fever, diarrhea, and more. Treatment involves identification, replacement of lost fluids and measures to restore gastrointestinal balance.

Where does Salmonella enterica typically live?

A Salmonella enterica infestation tends to begin with undercooked or contaminated foods, such as dairy, seafood, produce, poultry or other animal products. However, that’s not the only place that you’ll find Salmonella enterica. Any food that might have come into contact with animal feces (think: slaughterhouses or products touched by the hands of people who handle animals or food) can also carry this microbe.

Other common places Salmonella enterica typically live include unwashed kitchen countertops after food preparation and public restrooms. Older people, very young children and people who take specific drugs that affect gastric acid production can be more susceptible than most when it comes to Salmonella enterica.

Whether you’re interested in keeping your hands, the produce coming into your home, your bathroom surfaces or your non-porous surfaces clear of Salmonella enterica, you have to have a plan.

Fortunately, that’s where we’re able to help.

How can I keep my home safe from Salmonella enterica?

When you want to be 100% certain that your countertops, floors and other surfaces aren’t rife with Salmonella, you need to think about the science behind cleaning—and killing bacteria. First of all, they’re invisible. They’re microscopic. You cannot count on the evidence of your eyes to be sure that all of the Salmonella enterica has been washed away.

Secondly, you need a better cleaning mechanism than simply wiping and moving bacteria from one place to the next. You need to thoroughly, effectively rid them from your surfaces by killing the bacteria where it stands and making it hard for new bacteria to land and survive on a newly cleaned surface.

If this sounds impossible — or like a lot of work — it isn’t. All you need are the right products.

Render your surfaces clean AND safe with the right cleaner. An All-Purpose Cleaner that leaves your non-porous surfaces sparkling clean AND safe from Salmonella enterica is the way to go. As a bonus, Microgold® All-Purpose Cleaner is also part of the EPA’s “List N: disinfectants for use against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).”

Just be sure to use your products according to manufacturer directions. Cleaners work best when they have a few minutes to do their magic! Allow your products to do the hard work for you; you can concentrate on enjoying the safe cleanliness of your home afterward.
